Summer Philly, 2009- Blobfest in Phoenixville

Photos 1-8. In 1957, in Phoenixville, PA., a small group of moviemakers on a very low budget filmed The Blob, a movie long- considered one of the best "B" Sci-Fi movies of the decade-and according to some, of all time. It was released in 1958 and was also Steve McQueen's big screen debut as a teenager who tried to alert local authorities of impending doom at the presence of the Blob. Every year in mid- July, this small town hosts "Blobfest", a festival tribute to that cult movie and when you visit, it's like stepping back in time. The movie is shown at the original Colonial theatre where The Blob was filmed back in 1957 and when the show is over, 300 screaming attendees run for their lives in a reenactment of that classic scene. It's all good fun and this festival spirit runs throughout the town. When you walk down the street, you find yourself saying, "Man, I'd love to live here" until one of your buddys slaps you in the back of the head and reminds you that it snows ten feet deep in the wintertime. Not a good thing for someone who lives in the South and wears shorts in January. If you ever find yourself in this part of the country in summer, Blobfest and Phoenixville are surely worth the visit.
Photo 9. During our visit, we stopped by Iron Hill Brewery with our Uncle Brad. This nice young lady is Rachel Kochinsky and she was the hapless victim chosen to wait on us- all the other waitresses saw us the minute we walked in the door and would have none of it. But, she soldiered on and we soon learned that she sings and is a considering a move to Nashville. To reward her for her patience and for forgiving Uncle Brad for only ordering three appetizers instead of an entree, we're going to call Toby Keith and get her a gig as his backup singer and rhythm guitarist. It's the least we can do for someone that wants to move down to God's country....
