As I have reached the "over half a century old" mark, I was recently thinking about collecting and the things that I have collected over the years. There were several: comic books, Hot Wheel and Matchbox cars and Kiss memorabilia, but it was in the category of vintage Coke bottles that I was a Grand Ninja Master. I was so taken up by old Coke bottles that I would disappear for an entire day walking through the woods, looking for old bottle dumps to dig through. Some of those lost days were rewarded by a whippin' from my Mother because I had wandered out of earshot. When you get home at dusk and hear the words, "Raymond Mauldin, where in the Sam Hill have you been? I was worried sick," no amount of really cool, old bottles found could prevent what was coming and on the few occasions when I came home after dark, my Father was called in to do the "heavy lifting," if you know what I mean.

It was a pure love for those old bottles that led me to collect and looking back, I think it was the adventure of finding them that spurred me on for all those years. I'll never forget the old, half-decayed houses I went into or the construction sites in downtown Atlanta I visited, looking for anything those huge excavators may have dug up (had to be extra careful about those after-hours construction site security guys. They were generally very pissy). This all is a long and winding path that leads to this Les Paul 25/50. The care and craftsmanship that went into making it is obvious at first glance. There were approximately 3,411 made and they were considered as a "special order" back in '78 and 79, so unlike a regular Les Paul, it is a model that has the ability to uniquely complete or add to a collection. We have several collectors in our little herd and when any of them saw a guitar we had that peaked their interest, they'd give us a ring and some sort of deal would be struck. It was rarely a matter of weight or even history- it was usually about condition and originality. If we had a really cool story that went with a guitar, that was always a bonus and we would eagerly blabber on about it. It was just part of the fun of helping someone that collected.

This ain't no little boy's toy and at 10 lbs, 3 oz, you "gotta be a hoss to play this thing," as my old lead singer would say. The entire package as a whole is rather interesting, with the original matching-numbers warranty card, owner's ID card, green Gibson envelope and even the protector case warranty card being present. It's obviously a one-owner guitar and the guitar looks virtually unplayed, having the factory plastic still on the pickguard and electronics cavity cover. What I'm saying is, this guitar is clean, clean, and clean! Now, I thought we were getting a bonus pair of Seymour Duncan Saturday Night Specials because I found them in the accessory pocket of the case, but as it turns out, one of the original Series VII pickups is blown and needs to be rewound. I think we all know what kind of party that would be, but since they are original to the guitar, they'll be in the case when this guitar arrives at your place. The Duncans that are in the guitar are strong, aggressive and burly- very much like the big statue of that bull on Wall Street, so if you're really in the mood to make a statement or you are a collector and wish to add a unique piece to your collection, the guitar to fit that bill is right here in front of you. No matter how much time passes, quality Gibson guitars will always be in demand, regardless of how many whippins' you may have to take to get one...
