How many times have you rambled through a pawnshop or guitar store, looking for hidden treasure? Me? Well, that is how this company got started. Long before the concept of GrinningElk, there was just me. Just like Leonard Nimoy in "In Search Of." Heck, I always was up for a great scavenger hunt. On Saturday morning, I would leave the house and wouldn't come home until after the sun had set in the Western sky. Time is what I had but money, on the other hand was scarce. Why do I speak of this time, you may ask? Well, Jeff Beck must of had that same sense in him when he strolled into that Memphis guitar store some many years ago.
Either Jeff was bored between takes at the studio or, like me, he was a bit strapped. As the legend was written, he walked into Strings and Things and spotted the now- famous modified Oxblood Les Paul. His guitar, much like this guitar had the oxblood paint along with replaced humbucking pickups. As you also may know, the neck on his guitar was shaved down like Beck's original for a slimmer profile feel. Funny thing- I remember that guitar being on the cover of "Blow by Blow." My older brother must have been cool and recognized great tone when he heard it. Such an iconic guitar from an iconic player.
As for me on my quest for the holy grail? Sad to say I was not as lucky. I did get a cracked headstock Randy Rhodes and the Japanese version of Sonny and Cher singing "I Got You Babe." Being at the right place at the right time friends, is all I can say, but as a consolation, Ray and I do have a company and maybe, just maybe, you too can benefit. Where else are you gonna look at cool guitars and get a kooky story to boot? We both know, say it... GrinningElk. Yes the name just rolls off your lips, doesn't it?"
